Scrims
are light modifiers to soften light or remove shadows. You shot through scrims to change the effect. There are many different sizes and thickness based on specific conditions needing justified. All of the scrims I make from scratch with Lee Diffusion material. By the way, the Lee material can be somewhat expensive.
But, when you put everything together in it’s perspective, it’s well worth the cost. Without them, you would have nothing but bright light. The type of material I choose is based on how much light I want to come through when shooting specific items. Scrims can be used indoors or outside. When shooting outdoors, they are most used to block the hard raise of the sun softening the light for a more subtle feel.
With this said, if you have notice on some images there is a bright white light on the subject instead of a balanced light through out. Consequently, this can sometimes be the style the photograph prefers to shoot.
Modifiers
come in all shapes and sizes, from flash grids to large soft-boxes and umbrellas. These again are to bounce and diffuse light on it’s subject. In most cases, soft-boxes are often for shooting indoors or out at still products, portraits, fashion, etc. There’s all kinds of modifiers that can change the color of light using gels. Colored gels are for changing backgrounds and directional colored light on any type of subject.
When using gels, it adds great difference in the shoot. You can use them for a small area or the complete photograph. You can bounced through or towards to give different types of contrast with umbrellas. Some of the sizes are anywhere from 27″ to 100″. Hence, the larger umbrella, the more spread of light. Items being closer to the light creates a harder source. These are just a few notes to help you understand the detail of shooting photography.
